What Is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a traditional Chinese tile-based game that was originally played by 4 players. A standard Mahjong set contains about 144 tiles, which includes three numbered suits, Winds, Dragons, Season, and bonus flower tiles.

The main goal of the game is to complete a winning hand before the other competing players. Furthermore, in various common versions of the Mahjong game, a standard winning hand comprises four sets and one pair.  The four sets can include:

  • Chow: Three consecutive tiles from the same suit.
  • Pung: Three identical tiles.
  • Kong: Four identical tiles.
  • Pair: Two matching tiles are needed to complete the hand.

However, various Mahjong versions use unique scoring systems and additional rules, and this means that Hong Kong Mahjong, Chinese Competition Mahjong, and Japanese Riichi Mahjong are not played in the same way.

How Do You Play Mahjong?

In traditional Mahjong, the game begins with players receiving tiles from the wall. Each competing player is expected to hold 13 tiles, but the dealer will start with 14. The players will then take turns drawing and discarding as they aim to complete their hand.

Basically, the game follows this process:

  1. Draw one tile from the wall.
  2. Assess whether it improves your hand.
  3. Set aside one tile you no longer need.
  4. Put together pairings such as Chows, Pungs, and Kongs.
  5. Continue until someone completes a valid winning hand.

It is also important to point out that players can still decide to claim discarded tiles. A Kong or Pung can be completed via a proper discard from another competing player. Chow, on the other hand, is formed using a discard from only the player right before you in turn order.

This game requires strategy because you need to choose the best combinations to chase while also noting the tiles discarded by other players.
